[Historical Scenario] Location :Guadalcanal, 10 Km south of Point
Cruz. Henderson airfield had been secure for some time now, but
the Japanese were not yet ready to give up! The Japanese units
of 17th Army were still holding on to the east and west of the
airfield. The recent battles had seriously depleted their mapower
and with control of the waters around the island lost, supply
became even more difficult. The units of US XIV Corps were slowly,
but surely, driving the Japanese back to the northwest. An important
step in this operation was the attack on Kokumbona, but before
this could be achieved, the Jap strongpoints to the west of Mount
Austen had to be taken. The most dificult of these was the Gifu
stronghold where the remaining troops of 228th Infantry regiment,
commanded by Major Inagaki had been given the time to prepare
their defences. After some hard fighting in the past weeks, the
army's 132nd Infantry Regiment (supported by a batallion of 35th
Infantry regiment) had finally surrounded them and was ready
to eliminate the remainder of the Japanese forces east of the
Manitaku river.
